Healthcare services: vertical integration is all the rage

Yesterday, healthcare provider and retail pharmacy chain CVS Health Corp finally reached an agreement to acquire home-care provider Signify Health (in our portfolio). Vertical integration might create unique opportunities to improve the healthcare system.

Bottom line

Home-care and technology-powered models are increasingly being adopted to achieve greater efficiencies, decrease overall healthcare costs, and provide better care. The shift towards virtual, at-home, and value-based models has been an underlying driver of innovation for the healthcare industry.

Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc, UnitedHealth, and Walmart multibillion-dollar partnerships and deals are pressing other companies (such as CVS) to do the same to remain competitive. Players developing home and virtual services, as well as data analytics technologies, continue to attract the attention of tech giants and healthcare systems and appealing targets like Signify will continue to command hefty premiums.
