The possibility of using animal organs for human transplantation (xenotransplantation) has long been considered a solution to the organ shortage crisis. Decades of work and advancements in gene-editing techniques make this approach a real option. Recent successful pig-to-human transplants are reviving hopes to thousand of patients facing death while waiting for a life-saving organ. Though other competing technologies are under development, xenotransplantation may be the nearest-term solution to end the organ shortage. 

Our bionics portfolio is currently exposed to technologies supporting the patients’ organs while waiting for an organ transplant. The advent of xenotransplantation as a solution to organ shortages could drastically shift the competitive dynamics in the sector. We are thus closely monitoring these developments and are ready to adjust our exposure accordingly.
